What is the importance of a Multi-Flue Chimney Cap? The number one objective of this cap is to Protect your Chimney. Not only does this chimney cap keep the water, debris, and animals out of your chimney flue, but it will also help to protect the chimney top.
At the very top of your brick chimney structure is what is referred to as the Crown/Wash. The crown/wash is constructed of concrete which is poured on the entire top of the brick structure around the flue tiles, then domed. The purpose of the Crown/Wash is to force rain and other weather to roll off the chimney top rather than lay on top.
Over time, the crown/wash tends to develop cracks which will allow water into the brick chimney structure. This water will be absorbed by the brick and lay in the brick cores. During the winter months, this water will go through freeze and thaw cycles. As the water freezes it expands and actually causes the brick to crack and spall. Over a period of time this could actually destroy the brick at the chimney top, requiring the chimney top to be rebuilt.
Since a properly sized Multi-Flue Chimney Cap will cover the entire chimney top, there will be no weathering of the Crown/Wash. The rain and snow will not get onto the Crown/Wash, thus eliminating the water that could enter any developing cracks.
There are acually two styles of Multi-Flue Chimney Caps, the Top Mount and the Outside Mount Caps. The Top Mount Multi-Flue Chimney Cap sits on top of the brickwork and crown/wash and mounts with an adhesive and tapcon screws. The Outside Mount Multi-Flue Cap also sits on the top row of brick and crown/wash, but has and outer flange the actually hangs down over the top row of brick. Bolts are then threaded into the side flanges mounting the cap tightly to the top row of bricks.
All of the Caps on this page are "Top Mount Multi-Flue Chimney Caps". Since "Outside Mount Multi-Flue Chimney Caps" require exact measurements of your chimney top, these caps are usually ordered on a special order basis.
